It's Just Me

For me, relying on others requires an abundance of patience. I'm profusely independent and I have trouble accepting the fact that sometimes I just can't do it all. Ever since I joined wardrobe remix and started a blog, I've had an excuse I guess you could say, to go out and take plenty of outfit photos in the loveliest of places. As expected, this left me incredibly dependent upon someone elses time. . .

Resolution: Tripod, duh!

I actually bought the tripod a few months back, but after using it just once opted for the easier way out, someone else snapping the shot! I suppose it would of worked out that way just fine if not for my battle with patience and independence, but after seeing that most of you take your own photos, I figured that it really couldn't be as hard as I made it out to be on my first attempt. So yesterday I got dressed up and went out by myself for some shots.
I didn't get to wear this outfit anywhere else, only for the sake of playing with my tripod. Since I work nights at a restaurant, I really don't ever have the need to get fixed up during the day. A trip to get lunch and maybe a thrift store is the maximum amount of fun I experience away from home. It kind of sucks and I think that's probably why I joined wardrobe remix, to give me an excuse to get dressed everyday!

I'm not incredibly thrilled with any of the photos that I got, but I'm getting the hang of the tripod and the self timer button so before long I think I'll be able to get the pictures that I see in my head! I have to say, I'm pretty excited about taking on the tripod as my new assistant. I think that there's something different about a photo that is taken when your alone, seems a little more intimate when it's just you and the camera.

The Old Mill

This is The Old Mill in North Little Rock, Arkansas, officially known as "Pugh's Mill Park." It's not an actual old mill, but a life-sized sculpture by Dionysio Rodrigues, built and landscaped in 1933 as a replica of the real Pugh's Mill which milled actual grain a century earlier. It's a really beautiful garden spot, a popular place for locals to get wedding pictures taken.

Of historical interest at the old mill are some 19th century millstones and a couple of mile marker stones from a road near Dardanelle. These stones were set in place by an army engineer named Jefferson Davis, who later became the president of the Confederacy. The stones were used to mark the way for native tribes being relocated to western lands, thus marking two miles worth of the "Trail of Tears."
Arkansas Road Stories

The Old Mill is famous for being in the opening scene of the 1939 blockbuster movie Gone With The Wind. Although it is not known why David Selznick of Selznick Studios chose the Old Mill, it is believed to be the only remaining structure from the movie.

The Old Mill was honored on the 50th anniversary of the movie in 1989. It was also the site of the unveiling of the Gone With The Wind commemorative stamp. Over the years, stars from the movie such as Rand Brooks (Charles Hamilton) and Ann Rutherford (Careen O’Hara) have visited the Mill.

Built By Wendy Fall '09

I was going through some different fall collections on elle.com when I stumbled upon the Built By Wendy '09 collection and immediately fell in love! Since my brain is not working right now (for no good reason at all) I'm going to avoid writing as much as I can and just list my favorite things about this line!

- All the red... red lips, red tights, red shoes! It makes for such a classic vintage look, I only wish that I could pull off red lipstick. It just doesn't work with my olive skin tone.

-Prints! I'm in love with all of the polka dot pieces in this collection. With the red lips they remind me of my favorite 40's looks, perhaps something I saw Kate Beckinsale or James King wearing in Pearl Harbor.

-Tights, tights, tights....man have I missed those things! I would wear tights everyday of the summer if it weren't so dang hot, I just love what they do for an outfit. I'm especially glad to see that the textured tights are back since I'm not one to wear the printed ones that have been in style over the spring and summer-- I just can't seem to style those.

When I first started using flickr last year I didn't realize that it was a heavily trafficked site. My friends and I used a pro account to share photographs and inspirations, we just never really organized or tagged anything. No sets, no collections, no titles...nothing! Once I realized that flickr is a pretty big deal and that most people sort there photos and maintain a rather organized account, I started to clean up my own.

Boy did I have a mess on my hands!

Since it's a shared account with a couple of different photographers and models, I'm in over my head with content that I can't delete! I'm slowly figuring it out, making sets for each model and collections for the photographers, little by little, day by day, sorting and deleting through a collection of around 2,500 photographs. I've pretty much coped with the fact that it'll never be completely done!
I do have a little fun when I come across photos that I haven't seen in a while. That happened today when I found the group of photos shown above. I think they were taken back in February by my friend Cody at Burn's Park in Little Rock. It was before I had a blog so they weren't used for anything, just taken for fun when Cody and I were out and about feeling kind of bored.

Canoeing Hiatus

This past weekend I had the opportunity to explore some of the picturesque beauties of "The Natural State" as I went canoeing down the Spring River in northeast Arkansas. For the past two years my employers over at the Bonefish Grill in Little Rock have funded an overnight canoe trip for all of the employees who have been with the company since it's day one opening in July of 2007. With managers and all there were around sixteen of us either canoeing, rafting, tubing, or kayaking on this four hour long adventure spent powering down rapids and rowing past rustic structures and fascinating wildlife. I wish we could have taken some better shots of it all, but we were working with an underwater disposable camera!
The highlight of the trip was definitely the rope swing that we spent almost an hour jumping from. It was just to the left of that branch you see me dodging in the third photo above. We were so close to falling here that I had to bear hug the branch and grab our canoe to avoid the tip. My stomach hurt from all the laughing!! It was such an exciting and much needed vacation from the routine life and even better because it was free. I wish they could all be this beautiful...and adventurous...and uh-mazing!

I think I'm finally starting to get a hang of this etsy thing. It seems so much easier than my days spent on ebay hassling with html. I was seriously close to giving up on it all until etsy changed my mind! :)
I stocked the store with lots of different sizes and styles this week including my favorite vintage camisole that I've been hanging on to for some time. It really doesn't fit me, I just love how romantic and dreamy it is, especially when it hits the light! It's too beautiful to continue hanging on my dress rack so I went ahead and put it in the shop. I suppose I could go on and on about why I love each piece, but I won't do that to you all so here's the link!

Once again I've been captivated and inspired by the alluring photographs in Lula Magazine. I only own the most recent issue with Chanel Iman on the the cover, so it took the Lula facebook fan page to show me some things that I missed. I immediately fell in love with the photograph shown on the bottom right which sent me on an internet search for anything similar! I was optimistic at first, but then I realized I really didn't know how to search the topic. I tried several different froms of "hippie sequin lashes" and "hippie clown eyes," but there didn't seem to be anything similar. With that being said, I just decided to post some of my favorite eyelash photos from the 70's with the exception of the modern day time altering goddess, Courney Brooke. Her painted eyelashes and retro style are both so enviable along with her self portraits which are the most exquisite photographs I've ever seen.

Just weeks before my boyfriend and I moved into our new apartment back in April, I spent every spare second of my time daydreaming about the placement of the decorations and the arrangment of the furniture. We don't own a lot of living room furniture and we certainly didn't plan on buying any in this economy, so I had the idea to stack a few vintage suitcases together to form an end table. The plan was to use two or three which would be held together by a few rubber suckers, but of course I never found the exact suitcase that I wanted and eventually forgot about my diy furniture project.
It wasn't until I stumbled upon these crafty vintage suitcase ottomans here that I was immediately reminded of my idea. Now I'm back on the hunt for the perfect vintage suitcase, but this time I'm going to attemp to make an ottoman. I think they're pretty amazing and great for storing the remotes and proping up my legs! Can you think of some other ways to use a suitcase?

Another thing that I would love to have in my home is a charming little drop light. I've seen a lot of pretty innovative lights including tea cup, vases, and legos, but I think the one with the hats is my favoirte. I've got a thing for bowler hats and I think these pendants would add a great "gentlemen" theme to any room...especially a manly room used for poker or pool! But don't get me wrong, I would definitey hang these in my kichen if I could afford the price.

And if money was no issue at all, this is how my living room would look. I know a lot of people tend to prefer a cozier place to live with knit blankets draped here, stuffed pillows thrown there and lots of things piled everywhere but not me. I love simple but elegant, french victorian with a touch of modern. Unfortuantely I'm poor and I have no idea how to tie a room together as a whole. I'm good at saying "I like this, yes"..."I like that, yes"...do they go togehter, "I have no idea." Thankfully, this is where my sister shines! I do the clothes, she does the houswares. Hopefully with my obsessive internet searches for creative ideas and her knack for finding the best vintage decorating pieces we can make some sense of my place!

And just in case your wondering, I posted the second photo of the dress/shirt because I'm absolutely in love with it, really...in love with it! It's one of Hannah's favorites.

French Stripes

By now you've probably taken notice to all of the stripes that have graced the pages of your favorite magazines, blogs, and street style sites all over the web. I've seen 'em coming for a few months, black and white striped tees, or navy if your feeling nautical, paired under blazers, dresses, and rompers to recreate that classic look that Chanel had such an affinity for. I'm kind of embarrassed to say it now, but I really hated the trend when I first saw it emerging back on the scene. I couldn't help but conjure up the image of a mime, clad in stripes and face paint trying earnestly to get out of his selfmade box. I don't think it was until I saw the movie trailer for "Coco Before Chanel" that I really started to appreciate the look and now I'm on a thirft store mission. I've only been to a few shops this week, scouring the blouse racks stopping only for the stripes in search of that perfect french striped tee. I haven't had any luck yet, but I'm almost certain that by the end of the week something will have turned up!

One Versatile Dress, Three Different Looks

There's nothing like adding a great versatile piece to your wardrobe. The joy I get in mixing and matching items is evident the second you take a look at my closet floor. Blanketed under cardigans and scarves you'll find tsraps and oxfords thrown about in no orderly fashion. They're shuffled through as I chase after the next idea in my head, brainstorming to form the perfect outfit. Whether it works out or not is a different story, but the mess is a guarantee...surely I'm not alone here?
When I tried on my new (and perfect) dress from Modcloth, I knew I had a winner for the mix and match challenge. I decided to form three completely different looks from one dress to see just exactly how resourceful I could be.

Look #1/Shirt
For this look I chose to wear the dress as a shirt. I paired it with my favorite vintage high-waist skirt and a great pair of knit knee high socks, both thrifted for a grand total of $6. I finished the look with a vintage suede purse, also thrifted, a pair of lace up oxford heels from Target, and some darling heart-shaped sunglasses from Forever 21.
I think this look was my favorite. I really like how the bow (which is meant to tie in the back) brought the eye to the waist and eliminated the need for a belt or any heavy accesories.

Look #2/Skirt
For the second outfit I went with a 50's style cardigan and a pair of t-strap heels, both thrift finds originally from American Eagle. The short sleeved cardigan fit great over the top of my dress and couldn't have been any more perfect for the warm Arkansas weather! I topped it off with a lightweight, vintage Banana Republic purse and some turquoise horn rimmed glasses reminiscent of the one's that were worn in the 50's.
Although it was definitely my least favorite of the three looks, I was satisfied with how it turned out. I think a skinny belt would have looked nice, but with all the beautiful ruffles and buttons on the dress underneath, a belt would have highlighted some unwanted details creating more of a distraction to the look rather than complimenting it. The only regret that I have is hiding that lovable peter pan collar in the second photo! I was without a mirror when I slipped the cardigan on and completely forgot to pull the collar out. We took tons of photos before I realized what I'd done. How could I forget that collar? It's the BEST detail on that dress!

Look #3/Dress
Last and certainly not least is THE dress itself! It's the "hannah dress in summer sunset" paired with the "when the west was cute" belt, both from my choice shop Modcloth. The belt is actually meant to be worn on the hips, but with a few adjustments I was able to secure it at my waist. Combined with a pair of vintage slouchy boots, the look began to take on an indian element which always reminds me of Pocahontas or Tiger Lily, two of my favorite childhood indian princesses!

There's a bit of magic to these photos . . .

. . .the concept and the colors left me wanting more. . .

My friend showed me these photos recently on a blog that was in a foreign language with no way of translating the page. We were so curious as to who the model was, what the photos were for, and why the lady in the last photo is holding a pregnancy test combined with a look of terror and realization. . . uh, oh.
With just a bit of searching on the web, I was able to find out what this set is all about! The photos are a collaboration between photographer Neil Krug and supermodel Joni Harbeck for an upcoming Pulp Art book due out at the end of the year. I know I mixed the photos up just a little, I only hope that I didn't mess with the story too much!
Seems pretty interesting, definitely eye-catching. . .

Fourth of July: Family Farm

I really enjoy going out to the "boonies" to visit my parents house every now and then. It's quite a drive through southern cop town on past the shoe tree and a few country general stores and when it feels like you can't go any further, go ten more minutes and there is my home! It's not the life I would I choose, too far from civilization, but it's perfectly fitting for my parents with all of there animals and children! They moved there just after I left home for college so they could live the country life with tons of horses and dogs running around and plenty of scenery to take in. I had a blast running, and jumping, and swinging, and playing with my best ole' bud Dakota. . .the greatest dog ever! With a pond and a pool and so much land, my sister and I had the perfect setting for taking a few photos. I managed to sneak one of my dad fishing just before I left. . . he's always bettin' on that big catch!

....these are a few of my favorite things.....

1. These bottles of Seagram's VO and Smirnoff vodka were imported in 1969. They were given to me by a friend who found them with the labels still sealed in his parents attic. The vodka is actually mine and the whiskey my boyfriends who doesn't have quite the appreciation for history as I. It took less than a week for him to pop the label and take some shots.

2. I found these 19th century silhouette book ends at an estate sale for $8. It was love at first sight. . . I could have decorated my whole apartment around these two!

3. The blue skirt shown on the dress form was once a really long maternity dress. I really couldn't figure out what the designers intention for it were, so I just cut it uber short to make a high waist skirt. The length was a bit of an accident, I wish I would have kept it just a little longer, but seeing as there is no going back I just leave it on display in my living room. It's not completely unwearable so I'm sure there will eventually be some photos of me in it.

4. I hit the jackpot when I found this Ah- mazing vintage record player for just $50 at an estate sale. The speakers were closed at the sale so it took a little bit of curiousity to figure out exactly what it was. I had been searching for a great record player for months so I was ecstatic when I finally figured it out. I couldn't believe that it actually worked! The speakers are a little scratchy, but all in all it is probably my most favorite vintage items to ever pick up.

5. Our collection of records has grown to be pretty impressive. Where I spend money on clothes, my boyfriend dumps money on records and I ain't complainin'. I love listening to all the old and new artists on vinyl. Some of my favorites (just to name a few) are Panda Bear, T. Rex, Bill Withers, Grizzly Bear, Dark Was the Night, and Downriver Revival.

6. My magazine mirror almost always sparks the question, "did you make this?" As much as I would love to claim this work of art, sadly I didn't make it... I actually ordered it about a year or two ago from Urban Outfitters.

7. This piece right here is my prized possession! It's a 50's faux skirt swimsuit that's in absolutely impeccable condition. With gold stripes and diamond studs the lady who owned this had to feel like a Hollywood star. It's no where near my size, but I just don't think I could part with it. No price seems to make me smile as much as I do every time that I look at it.

8. A local vintage store owner was holding a yard sale at her home where she sold me a bag of dresses for $15. They all needed a bit of work, zipper repairs here, hem jobs there, but really not too much work at all. In that bag was this beautiful 1930's dress. I'm no good at identifying the fabric, but I can tell you it's lightweight, sheer, and dreamy! The damage on this dress is probably more than I can repair being that it's so old. It's really no big loss since it didn't really fit anyway, so I just leave it there on display with the suit. My two most treasured vintage clothing pieces!

MacArthur Park: Bike Rides

Ever since my sister moved into the apartment upstairs we've become best friends again. She's only nineteen months older than me so we grew up close, loving and hating each other guts but always being stuck with one another. Now that we're older and much more mature with a shared love for fashion we're always hanging out, talking vintage and taking photos. She's my biggest help with this blog, my etsy store, and pretty much everything that I do.

She let me borrow her bike yesterday to take pictures for the Chictopia bike contest. Evey since I moved to the historic district in downtown Little Rock, I've been dying for a bike. . . I figured I'd try to win one before I finally broke down and bought one (through Craigslist, of course). Her bike is really cool. It's a vintage Schwinn in the best shade of green with skinny tires and the cutest basket on the front. She found it at goodwill with her amazing thrifting skills for like 7 bucks, I think.

We needed some air in the tires so we made a big loop around through MacArthur Park to get to the gas station. I felt like her little kid riding my bike out in front of her as she walked and I rode through the park. We followed the sweetest family of ducks down the sidewalk and around the corner to find a mama duck and her beautiful baby chicklings. I just couldn't resist sneaking into a photo with them. . .there so darling when they're little!

DIY: My little creations...

I found this 90's Noir Noir jumpsuit at a huge yard sale that was raising money for cats? It was kind of weird, but I got a lot of things there for dirt cheap. I think this piece cost me a dollar. I really couldn't ever see myself wearing it, so I cut the top off and made a great pair of high waist, pleated pants.

I made this purse a while back, it's just been tucked away amongst a mess of projects. I cut the sleeve from a vintage dress and sewed the top of it shut. I used the button cuff as the purse closure and added a little bit of twine for the strap.

I'll post more pictures of the outfit tomorrow!

Roaring 80's

I had to wear this dress just once before I sold it! It's the best drop waist dress that I own except for the fact that it's almost too little in the hip department, nothing too uncomfortable though. As much as I like the drop waist, I think the oversized sleeves are my favorite detail. They make me feel like a little kid playing dress up in my moms closet... how I miss those days!

Holli: The Long Lost Beauty

I love looking though rolls of vintage photographs that chronicle someones life and collectively tell a story about what they were like, where they had been, and what kind of people they hung out with. It's delightful to be impacted by all the love and laughter that they shared and all the big moments that they went through in their lives. What I'm most interested in, however, is those lovely ladies that went through their 20's in the 1940's. I'm so fascinated by their tales of love, rebellion, war, fashion, technology...all the things that I have encountered as a young girl in my 20's.

I guess it's because of that that I felt immediately drawn to the woman in the following photos, not to mention her infectious smile and her sensational taste in clothes. The photos give you such an intimate look into her world of friendship, love, and family that you almost feel like a friend at the end.

As if her beauty and smile weren't enough, her photos are accompanied by the most bizarre and coincidental story that I've heard in some time. I didn't want to butcher it or forget a detail so I decided to deliver it to you just as I read it.

"HOLLI"

"Here is one of the happiest faces I have come across in a long time. She is in most of the photographs in this "found" batch of old prints. They date from the 1940's and do tell a bit of a story. What do you see?

I had to make up the names "Holli and her friend "Thelma." They have glamorous smiles and lots of clothes.

She just looks like a Holli, maybe “Hollywood”. She dominates a set of 116 pictures found all in one bunch from an estate sale in Johnson City, New York. I posted the whole set originally in August of 2008.

There was nothing noted on the reverse of any of the photographs but there are lots of landmarks, lots of people. Someday I hoped, someone would recognize something and at least establish a location..."

"Then, in June of 2009 I found another batch of photographs from an estate sale in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. You can imagine my moment when I saw “Holli” again looking up at me from the stack, about 400 miles from the first group and ten months later.

I was able to coordinate some of the photographs by means of the photo lab’s series stamps on the reverse of many of them. Others matched in physical details of the prints. Six photographs, unrelated in any other way, have a light red stain at the edges showing they have been stored in the same place for a long time and thus linking them together. A few of the photographs in the Pennsylvania batch must have been taken on the SAME ROLL of film as the New York batch. From the clothing and locations, obviously some were taken the same day, perhaps only minutes apart. So now there are 63 more photographs of our Hollie, her friends and her time.

One thing stands out in the Pennsylvania group. There is ONE photograph with a date on the reverse. November 22, 1943. Hollie stands on her toes to give her man in uniform a big smooch. It must have been a special moment for them."

"In the set I have designated each item as Ney York Source or Pennsylvania Source in the tags to show where each photograph was found. In addition I have noted the origin in some of the captions.

Our Holli was a popular girl, perhaps a USO volunteer. She loved the beach and the sun. Her bright smile probably made her an instant friend to anyone she met.

What would you do if you had to wear the same dress for the next 365 days?

It sounds crazy, but after wearing a uniform for years at her public school in India, it's hardly a challenge for Sheena Matheiken. The Uniform Project is a year-long fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots movement that is revolutionizing education in India. At the end of the year, all of the contributions will go toward the Akanksha's School Project to fund uniforms and other educational expenses for slum children in India.
In May, Sheena embarked on her mission to exercise sustainable fashion as she documents her daily looks along the way. With tons of accessories and seven identical staple dresses, Sheena is on her way to creating 365 creative and stylish looks. What an inspiration!

I've had this dress in my closet for about 5 months now, but this is my first time to wear it. Can you believe that? I actually put it on with the intention of selling it in the etsy shop, but now I'm having second thoughts! The fabric is so sturdy, and the condition is absolutely flawless. Gah, why does it have to fit so well? I used to hate dresses that stopped right below the knee because I didn't think they were flattering on me at all, but now I'm really not bothered by it. I think it's a big part of the vintage look!

Ah, decisions, decisions.
Maybe I'll wear it a few good times before passing it on!

We Are Koalas, Liebemarlene, Chicken Dinner Candybar

Ever since I started my strict shopping ban, I've found myself browsing the internet more and more making wishlists and reminiscing the days when money was plentiful. As unintentional as it was, the most delightful peach dresses kept popping up from store to store turning out to be my favorites.

The first one shown above is to die for. I'm going to recommend that you visit their shop to see the details for yourself. The tiered lace sleeves and beautiful silhouette left me drooling! I'm not even sure that it will fit me, but I loved it so much that I went ahead and placed a bid anyway. Fingers crossed!

The second needs no introdution. If you found my blog than you probably already know the lovely Rhiannon. Her shop is a continuous rotation of amazing vintage treasures that always leave my inspired. This peach 50's dress is so charming that little miss Rhi is going to borrow it from her shop and wear it on vacation! I guess if I was selling it I would have to do the same. Just one good wear!

The last and final peach dress that I've fallen for is from Chicken Dinner Candybar, my new favorite etsy shop. I'm sad to say that this dress just recently sold, but I'm pretty sure that it was too small for me anyway or I would have already had it. I love how the collar almost looks like a sailor dress with a wonderful little bow in the front.

Gah....I want a new dress now!

I've kind of lost the thift bug here lately. I used to be religious about my weekly thrifting...estate sales Thursday's and Friday's, Goodwill Tuesday's and Thursday's. It was insane how often I shopped. Now I'm completely overloaded with clothes, shoes, and bags. I'm in desperate need of an etsy unload, and I won't allow myself to shop any more until it happens. It's coming soon, I promise!

This week, I cheated a little and went to goodwill and an estate sale. I found a great leather Coach purse along with the two amazing sheer pieces shown above. The first is a slip that I just can't imagine hiding underneath a dress. It's so gorgeous with lace around the collar and waist, it makes me feel like a fairy or a princess...or a fairy princess! I'll definitely be wearing a slip underneath this slip. :) The second piece is a top from Forever 21 that still had the tags on it at Goodwill, $22.80 for $3...such a great deal. I love anything with a bow in the front, and the lightweight material will be perfect for the hot summer to come.

I wore this out thrifting with some friends yesterday. I guess you could say I went with an indian theme...feathers on the shirt/fringe on the sandals. I rarely wear either of these pieces, so I was happy to find that they went well together. The thirt stores were closing by the time I got out, but I was able to find a couple of pieces that I really like, both of them sheer and summery (more on that tomorrow). We were only able to make it to the worst goodwill in town before closing time, so we decided that since we were so broke that we would just grill the remainder of our Bonnaroo food. It was delish and the company was nice!

Bonnaroo 2009

We made it back from Bonnaroo at 5 A.M. Monday morning after a 6 hour drive and an exciting weekend of music, camping, sun, and storms. It's always so bittersweet packing up and pulling away from your camp site because on one hand, you want a shower and a bed, but on the other, you want to stay and live this hippie lifestyle forever. The thought of work and routines seems unbearable after 4 days of complete freedom from "the man." For those of you who haven't been before, Bonnaroo is pretty much free of rules. I mean, there are rules, but let's just say they are a bit overlooked. The few cops that are there pretty much just enforce safety as they ride their horses around, letting them shit in the middle the walkways. (F.Y.I. Always watch the ground when you walk!)

Their were approximately 100,000 people there with miles and miles of campsites set around Centeroo ,which houses the stages and art tents. It's a setting that could easily turn into mass chaos, if not for the amazing sense of community and peace with music as the common factor. There are tons of vendors selling clothes, hemp, pipes, and posters with plenty of fried foods, funnel cakes, and lemonades in there too. The coolest part is that pretty much anyone can be a vendor! There were plenty of people selling blood mary's, cigarettes, and beers from there camp sites along with chocolates, heddies, and doses. I'm telling you...Bonnaroo is a complete step out of reality and totally worth the experience!

I was blown away by this show. It's pretty crazy when you love a bands album already but think that they sound even better live.

I've seen them twice and both times they didn't bring it. Their sound is faint and weak....very very disappointing.

T.V. On the Radio:
Horrible live show! I love this band so I was pretty disappointed by their poor stage presence.

Right before I left for Bonnaroo, I saw on the ModCloth Blog that they would be hiding fun filled totes on 3 different days throughout Centerroo. It was set up like a scavenger hunt with clues given out on their twitter. I was only able to get twitter to work on one of the days because of the abundance of phones in the area. I ran to the mushroom fountain just 5 minutes after the clue was tweeted to look for the tote, but was unable to find it. I felt weird looking around and didn't want to grab someone elses stuff since I didn't know exactly what the tote looked like. I gave up pretty quick because I was missing too much of Bon Iver's incredible set.

Bonnaroo '09 was nothing short of amazing. It's always an unforgettable experience, and I always come home just a little bit closer to the ones that I left with. I'm praying that Bonnaroo '10 will have an equally amazing lineup and that the weather will be just a little bit better (I think a tornado touched down the first night). Until then it's back to reality.

While we were at the Dallas Museum of Art, my boyfriend and I did a little playing around in the gift shop. We found these great little masks that had us laughing hysterically, and we just couldn't resist taking a couple of photos. I thought it was hilarious that after months of hunting, I finally found a boater hat...kind of! The cheeks and hat look so crazy on me! The rat mask suited Jake just perfectly considering he was already wearing that wacky three-eyed mustache cat shirt from Grizzly Bear. We had fun killing some time, and I picked up a wonderful book called "Vintage Alexandria," which contains photographs of the city from 1860-1960. Once I get back, I'll be scanning in all my favorite photos from it!

I officially LOVE my new sailor dress. I wore it out yesterday and chose to style it with a pair of red heels from goodwill. They've got the cutest little rose buds on the top and the perfect size heel for my liking. I haven't found much else in my closet to wear with those shoes, so I was happy to finally have a match. I tried to pin my hair up into a bob after watching the Chanel cruise runway show, but of course I was working with less product and a lot less talent than the Chanel hair stylists. My hair pales in comparison to the models, but it worked out for my peaceful Sunday stroll downtown.

I picked up this great little 50's cotton sailor dress the other day. It was kind of pricey for my budget, but I've been searching for one like it for months, so I couldn't pass it up! I found it at Paddywack's, a local vintage shop that is full of the best vintage in town. It's got tons of 1930's blouses, wonderful hats and purses and the best 40's and 50's dresses! I always stop in and make a little wishlist, but I can never afford to buy anything. I think this is only the second time that I actually made a purchase. I dont splurge too much, so i figured this was a pretty good buy at $50. It's the perfect length, and with my favorite summer look right now being white, it's the perfect color too.

While I was paying, I noticed a cigar box guitar laying on a table. The shop owner told me that it was hand made by a local artist and musician who sells them for around $250. I thought it was a pretty creative hobby. It kind of reminded me of Jake's circuit bending projects, where he'd try to rewire kids instruments and tape players to get all sorts of different sounds.

I really wish that we would be in town through Saturday so we could hit up this awesome flea market called Trader's Village. I grew up in Fort Worth, so my family and I were regular attenders of the weekly market, and we would spend the day walking around and checking out all the vendors items. I completely forgot about it for a while, but ever since I remembered it, I've been dying to go back. We're coming back to Arkansas on Friday, so it won't be possible, but one of these days I'll make a special trip just for Trader's Village.

I finally got my Nico vinyl in the mail this past weekend after two months of shipping problems. I ordered it at the beginning of April but with the move and the new address, shipping was a big mess. I'm so glad to finally have it! When I saw the back cover photo I couldn't believe how much Kate Moss resembles Nico. I've never noticed it before, but surely I'm not the only one that sees it now. What do you think?
The album I ended up getting is Chelsea Girl and the biggest motivator for me purchasing that particular record was the song "These Days." I'm posting the video that made me fall in love with the song and Ms. Nico. It's from the Royal Tennenbaums, and Nico's track sets the scene beautifully. Thank you Wes Anderson.

White Dresses in the Summer

I'm so inspired by beautiful white cotton dresses in the summertime. I had to take this photo from my dads old albums because I adored those dresses so much. I don't even know the girls in the photo, I'm sure they are family or old neighbors, I'm just so intrigued by their adorable dresses, curly bobs, and pleasant dispositions. (My dad is the little guy in the undies)

Then there is my mom in much later times. I think this photo was taken in '72 or '73, back when my mom had big dreams of being a model. She ended up moving to Guam, where my dad was in the Air Force, and starting a family. I adore her outfit in this photo, although it's probably just a nightgown and some army boots. It's so in tune with the street fashion of today. (I think it's the boots!) Again, I just love the white dress.

I discovered an amazing fashion designer whilst browsing through the handmade clothing on etsy yesterday. Her name is Patricia Ayres and her shop, which is chock-full of innovative clothing, collages, and prints, is called Artlab. I was seriously blown away and utterly inspired by her work which includes photography, fashion design, installation art, printmaking, and sculpture. The hand silk screening and conceptual designs are truly unique and make me wish that I would have choose the life of art school.

These are my favorite looks from Targets most recent feature designer, Tracy Feith, which will be available from May 17-June 20. The vintage inspired pieces have a real surfer, boho-chic look and feel to them with beautiful floral prints and a little bit of Lolita influence. There are a few pieces, which aren't shown here, that have a bit too much 1960's upholestry look for my taste but overall I'm a fan of this collection. It's way more me than the super punky Alexander McQueen line.
My favorite thing about the collection is the styling of black socks with sandals! If you would have shown me that a year or two ago, I would have considered it a disgrace to fashion, but now, I would totally combine the two. I think it was actually yesterday that I was thinking about wearing black socks with sandals at Bonnaroo (when I'm not wearing my new pastel pink KEDS).

Over the past several months I've gotten pretty obsessed with searching for vintage dress patterns on ebay. Whether it be a sailor blouse or a drop waist dress, there is always a specific style that I'm on the hunt for. Over time, I've purchased a few and built up a small collection of shift dresses and bathing suit patterns, but there were always more styles that I wanted.
All of that changed last week when my friend Brittney brought me hundreds of vintage dress patterns from her grandmothers collection. There were literally hundreds, and I couldn't even wait to dive into all the different cuts and styles that her grandmother once wore. I found a couple of really old ones from the 50's, a few from the 60's and 70's (my faves), and a whole bunch from the 80's. I posted a few of my favorites below.
I think the one that I'm most excited about is the swimsuit pattern. 50's and 60's swimsuits are what I've been searching for most on ebay, I just never really have much luck. The romper is definitely a close second, as I'm always talking about those things!
This seriously was like the greatest gift ever, better than Christmas! Now I have just about every collar, sleeve, and yoke that I could possibly dream of, and although I'm not the greatest, most patient seamstress of all time, I plan on really focusing and working hard to create a great vintage inspired collection!

Happy Memorial Day to everyone! Today Jake and I are going out to my parents house for some grilling and swimming. Cody and I finally went and took photos at my favorite alley downtown. First we did some thrift store shopping where I found two pairs of KEDS! Neither of them were the color that I was looking for, but at a grand total of $6.00, I went ahead and got both pair. Now I have a pair in black and soft pink, each from a different decade. I really didn't have much luck other than that. Since I have so many vintage clothes to sell already, I'm pretty selective about what I buy. I guess that best thing that happened while we were out shopping was finding out that next Monday is 50% off day at Saver's. 50% off the whole entire store...I live for these days!
Later on, Cody and I went to Main Street downtown where there is an amazing alley full of moss, water stains, rust, and wood...all the things we love to photograph! We had a good time, and we got some pretty good photos too.

Summer with the Girls

One of the best vacations that I've ever had in my life was spent near my aunt and uncles beach house in Gulf Shores with my best friend Jessica. We were barely eighteen, if that, and thrilled to be spending our first summer without the parents.

Our mission: boys, suntans, boys.

After looking through all of these vintage beach photos from the flickr group pool "Vintage Bathing Beauties/Belles- Late 19th century to 1930's," I was reminded of that summer. It makes me miss the friendship and the moments that we shared as naive little teenagers on the hunt for love. Although were all grown up now, (kind of) with boyfriends and real jobs (well, at least she's got her masters), I would love to plan another summer trip for just me and my Jess!

I have fallen in looove with Dear Creatures Spring/Summer 2009 collection, and rarely do I ever find an entire collection that appeals to me like this one. Just flipping through the lookbook, I found at least six pieces that I would wear. Designer Bianca Benitez' lovely line, inspired by Pricilla Presley and Sharon Tate, contains a variety of 1960's inspired colors and prints. Its number one fan, Zooey Deschanel has been caught in Dear Creature threads in several different interviews, and she even holds up two of the dresses in her famous cotton commercial. (they are the last two dresses in the ad...here)
I can't wait for the fall 2009 collection to hit the shelves in August. I can't find any sneak peak photos, but I do know that it is a collection inspired by 1960's girl scouts troops! That may sound silly to some, but I love the idea of little girl dresses and troop photos. I'm so excited to see what's to come!!!

Bonnaroo Inspiration: KEDS

All I want for Bonnaroo is some KEDS! Last time I attended Bonnaroo was back in 2007, and I made the mistake of wearing sandals. With so much dirt in the air and on your toes, sandals feel icky, so I need a good closed-toe shoe. KEDS are my pick because they're so comfortable and they're kind of in style. I looked them up on the KEDS website, just to get an idea of what they cost these days, and I couldn't believe my eyes....$50! I remember having seven or eight pair at a time when I was a kid because they were the cheap shoes that I was allowed to get dirty.

Although I thought KEDS were just the shoes of the 80's, I found that KEDS originated back in 1916. They were marketed as the first canvas-top "sneaker" and probably cost about a buck then. I can't find too much information about "Karl The Karrot Keds Klub", but I do know that it was a childrens show that came on daily in San Francisco. Most families were just getting their first television and kids were clinging to the long-haired karrot puppet. Who knew KEDS had so much history to them? I just want a good pair in white, navy, and red, for what they cost back in 1916. I guess my only chance is to hit up the thrift stores.

Vinyl Obsession: DARK WAS THE NIGHT

DARK WAS THE NIGHT

My boyfriend bought this vinyl a few months ago, and it has been in heavy rotation at our home ever since. Dark Was The Night was produced by brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National, who formerly worked for the charity organization, Red Hot which benefits aids research. Their proximity and relationships with other musicians allowed the guys to recruit some pretty phenomonal artists for the project. I know this is all old news in the music world, but I just can't get enough of this album.

At first, I feel completely in love with Yeasayers song, Tight Rope.

And now, I'm pretty stuck on The Nationals, So Far Around the Bend. Beautiful....

And I'm slowly moving on and on and on. Another love is Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner's, Big Red Machine.

A Historical Day at the Market

I finally got around to listing some dresses in the etsy shop yesterday, but photoshop was being uncooperative and wouldn't save my files. I wasted my morning and built up quite a bit of frustration, so I decided to take a stroll downtown to the river market. I called Cody up so I wouldn't have to walk alone and so we could explore all the historical buildings in my new neighborhood.

When we got downtown, we saw that the Arkansas Studies Institute, a historical building that has been under construction from the inside out for a few years now, was finally open to the public. The building is absolutely breathtaking inside and out, and it houses many manuscript collections revealing a look into Arkansas' history and its people. It's focus is to promote a greater understanding of Arkansas' history, art, literature, and culture. There are several photograph collections focusing on all aspects of Arkansas' history, including military, education, plantation, building, architecture, natural resources, etc. Along with the photographs, there are several regional, national, and world maps on display, with some dating back to the 17th century.

On the entry level floor, there is a gallery for local artists to sale their work and a rotating photography gallery. This month, the gallery is featuring tons of photographs dated from 1900-1950 of inmates at the Arkansas Correctional Facility. Most of the photographs were mug shots of men and women that a photographer found in a drawer and restored for the gallery. Several were taped back together and scanned back in, adding to the worn look of the shots.

Although we only explored the first floor, we learned a little more about the building through the pamphlets at the front door. Apparently, the building is an extension of the Central Arkansas Library System and the top floor houses the first research library in Arkansas. Still unfinished, and soon to come is an archival collection. Cody and I were so ecstatic to have discovered such a fascinating place with so much information that we would have never found on our own, and....it's free!

Arkansas Studies Insitute

After our unexpected and refreshing detour, we got right back on track to the used bookstore. I absolutely love this place because I can afford to pick up a few books, unlike Barnes and Nobles where I can only get one because they're so expensive. I found a great little photography book called "The Joy of Photographing People" that is full of old and new photography (which I've been on the hunt for), but I didn't have much luck finding any history of costume books (which I've also been hunting for).

When we were checking out, the hyper librarian noticed that I had a photography book. She got so excited and began to tell me about an Arkansas photography book that was published back in September. Apparently, the Arkansas Democrat Gazette held a contest asking Arkansas natives to submit photographs that represent Arkansas to them. The winners were selected and their work was published in this book. It's a thick book full of nature, people, and places that truly represent our state, and I would have bought it had it been a little cheaper.
As much as Cody and I are out and about taking photos, we were shocked that we hadn't heard anything about this contest when it was going on. Most of the promotion was through the paper, and like most kids in our generation, we get our new from the internet. I asked if they were planning on doing a second book, and she told us that the project was a great success and that it would probably take place again in 2009. Now our eyes are open, and we may just become regular readers of the Sunday paper.

Baron Adolph de Meyer: First Fashion Photographer

In 1909, the weekly high society magazine, Vogue was purchased by an American publisher Conde Nast. He wanted to keep the magazine geared toward the rich and famous, but also more accessible for the mainstream. That's when Conde Nast hired a highly accomplished European photographer, Baron Adolph de Meyer who is often called the founder of fashion photography. Through his wife, Olga Caracciolo, de Meyer met and photographed numerous society members, models, and dancers in their own high fashion clothing and accessories. He was a pictorialist who worked in photogravure, a process developed in the 1830's, which merges photography and printmaking. After much success with Vogue and Vanity Fair, in 1921 de Meyer began working with the competitor, Harper's Bazaar. He worked there for 13 years before a new editor came in and redefined the direction of Harper's Bazaar, leaving de Meyer without a job. He died in 1949, virtually forgotten as a photograper. Although his final days were spent out of work, de Meyer will forever be remembered as a true visionary with a delicate idiom who allowed his subjects to portray their true personalities in front of the lens.

It's always beautiful to see the innovators of an industry. I really enjoyed researching de Meyer and learning the origins of fashion photography. De Meyer paved the way for a fashion obsessed culture before it was accessible to anyone but the rich. His prints are extraordinary and also very rare as he destroyed most of them before the war. I think my favorite is that of the African-American beauty Josephine Baker, an American singer, dancer, and actress. Another interesting aspect of de Meyers photography are his still life prints. I didn't post any of them, but they are definitely worthy of a look.

Me and my sister in the late 80's

I've had a serious admiration for playsuits every since I was a little girl. I can remember wearing them all the time when I was a kid. I don't recall too many details except that most of them had straps that tied over each shoulder and some with a little smocking at the waste just like the one my sister is wearing in the photo above. At the time, I had no idea (nor did I care) that they had been such a huge trend amongst the women in my grandmothers generation. They came in so many different styles and colors, and some with matching cover up skirts that turned the suits into perfect little dress ensembles! I just love how all the women above look so happy and playful, almost child-like, in such adorable little one piece numbers.

I've had my eye on that Marc Jacobs suit ever since I read the most recent issue of Lula Magazine. It's colors are barely even noticeable in the photo, and even still it caught my eyes. I think the most inspiring thing about most of the playsuits that I've seen are that they are all different, all unique in their own way. There are so many variations in length, color, collars, necklines, closures, and basic details. I guess you could say that the same goes for dresses, blouses, pants, and so on, but I think it's refreshing to see a silhouette that has been tucked away for so long. I mean, I realize that playsuits and rompers aren't the most universally flattering garment to wear, but why does it seem like they disappeared completely until now?

This dress reminds me of some of the dresses my mom wore in the 80's. I don't know, I think it's one particular picture I'm thinking of. It's a family photo at a picnic, and mom is wearing the perfect little pale yellow and white striped dress. Maybe that's why a subconsciously paired it with a picnic basket purse. Because of that one photo, I pick up any little blouse or dress that looks remotely like it. Mom would love to hear that. :)

Numero Tokyo: Havana Rendez-vous

Here's a look at some more photographs from the the internet that I felt were worthy of a post. They really inspired me, especially the last photo which reminds me a lot of Cody's photography style. These photos, which will be in the May 2009 issue of Numero Tokyo, have such a depression feel in the colors and in the surroundings. My absolute favorite is the one of the couple on the bed. This photograph makes me ask questions, which I like, and all of the colors and textures are stunning: the walls, the bed, the t.v., the shoes, it's all so beautiful! I love photos of things or places that aren't perfect, Cody's the same way. That's why we're always on the hunt for old decrepit buildings and furniture; we contemplate breaking into boarded up mansions downtown a lot, but we're always too scared to try.

Of course they are shot by none other than the awe-inspiring Annie Leibovitz, and they feature several designers wearing their own designs, including Marc Jacobs and John Galliano.

The Adventures of Cody and Starr

Things have been kind of slow around here in the vintage shop; as you know, I'm always shopping for vintage, so I have plenty hanging up waiting on an auction, but I will be moving to a new place in a week so the store has been put on hold. My boyfriend and I are real excited about moving into a friends old apartment downtown. It's a cute townhouse with brick walls on the inside and wonderful lighting throughout, and it's in a beautiful area. It's a great place to have a pseudo studio and to find great inspiration! I can't wait til we get there.
Just when we find a spot for photos, Cody installs some amazing track lighting in his apartment. We tested it out and had a little fun with it one night. We actually really like how some of the photos turned out.

I'm a sucker for hats and hairpieces; I've got a huge collection of my own, so naturally I was excited when I saw these photos. I can appreciate the fact that they're in black and white too. I think the texture of her hair and the prints she is wearing do great things for these photographs. Lovely!

I love every piece that I picked up, but I couldn't quit thinking about the horn rimmed glasses that I left behind. This sounds horrible, but I went back today. I got the glasses, a dress, a blazer, a cardigan, and an old LIFE magazine. I'm feeling a little guilty now, but I adore every piece that's hanging there. I'll try to post photos of the rest later.

Estate Sale Obsession: Swimsuits and Dresses

I went to an estate sale two weeks ago that was decent; I got a few vintage blouses and a great little bow tie, but there really wasn't any great vintage clothes. When I was checking out, a worker told me that I came one day too late for the vintage clothes, she said they were cleaned out yesterday. I hated hearing that...I would rather just think that this lady didn't save her old clothes. She told me about an upcoming estate sale full of vintage clothes and incredible designer bags; I anticipated this one for days. The listing showed furs, vintage glasses, purses, hats, dresses.......everything. Today was the day! I waited in line all alone for 30 minutes just to get my hands on this lush's vintage. It was beautiful! A lovely home on it's own secluded park-like lot. An indoor pool, a huge sun room, hallways and hallways of rooms, and two jacuzzis! In one room there were dress racks full of vintage dresses and coats. It was a battle in there, but here's what I made out with:

Hello. Welcome to Cazimi's fashion blog and vintage shop! With our blog, we hope to acheive a scrapbook of inspiring photos, vintage fashion, affordable finds, fashion trends, and our very own fashion photography and vintage shop. I guess I'll start with a proper introduction.

STYLIST/BUYER
I'm Starr, the founder of Cazimi. I do the buying, sewing, and styling. I just recently finished an extensive 7 month couture fashion design program where I learned tons about sewing and drafting patterns. I've always been tremendously inspired by vintage clothing, so I thought why not open my very own store where I can showcase the vintage that I love and all the styling that goes with it!

Then there's the man I couldn't live without. My photographer, right-hand man, and a very close friend, Cody. Cody is a photography student at UALR. He does an amazing job, and he is always able to convey my vision for Cazimi.
